1. General Assessment Guidance
• Your summative assessment for this module is made up of this one submission which accounts for 100% of the marks
• Please note late submissions will not be marked.
• You are required to submit all elements of your assessment via Turnitin online access. Only submissions made via the specified mode will be accepted and hard copies or any other digital form of submissions (like via email or pen drive etc.) will not be accepted.
• For coursework, the submission word limit is 5000 words. You must comply with the word count guidelines. You may submit LESS than 5000 words but not more. Word Count guidelines can be found on your programme home page and the coursework submission page.
• Do not put your name or contact details anywhere on your submission. You should only put your student registration number (SRN) which will ensure your submission is recognised in the marking process.
• A total of 100 marks are available for this module assessment, and you are required to achieve minimum 50% to pass this module.
• You are required to use only Harvard Referencing System in your submission. Any content which is already published by other author(s) and is not referenced will be considered as a case of plagiarism.
• BPP University has a strict policy regarding authenticity of assessments. In proven instances of plagiarism or collusion, severe punishment will be imposed on offenders. You are advised to read the rules and regulations regarding plagiarism and collusion in the GARs and MOPP which are available on VLE in the Academic registry section.
• You should include a completed copy of the Assignment Cover sheet. Any submission without this completed Assignment Cover sheet may be considered invalid and not marked.
2. Assessment Brief
You are a management consultant undertaking a series of projects for the Board of Directors of the Apple company. As a company, Apple regularly reviews the effectiveness of the Board as part of their Corporate Governance Strategy.
The Board have asked you to complete two pieces of work focussing on Executive Leadership and Governance. The two tasks are set out below.
PART A (Formative) – Board Review Report for new and existing Board Members (40 MARKS)
You are required to produce a report which will cover a key section in the Annual Board Review. Two new board members have recently joined as non-executive directors who are to sit on the main board as well as joining the remuneration committee. Your report should contain the following sections:
1. Organisational Culture and the Role of the Board (12 marks)
– A brief evaluation of the leadership style and organisational culture at Apple.
– The main duties of the board – what we are responsible for, and who we are responsible to
2. Corporate Governance (10 marks)
– The Corporate Governance framework for Apple
– A critical evaluation of the remuneration committee’s role at Apple
3. Regulatory Landscape and Management of Risk (18 marks)
– Evaluate the Board’s responsibility for risk management
– Analyse and evaluate the regulatory landscape for Apple and the impact regulators have on the company’s success
– Analyse and evaluate the risks faced by Apple
– Recommend and explain appropriate responses to the risks faced by Apple and explain the role of the Board in managing these risks
PART B- Leadership Report – 60 MARKS
You are required to undertake a review of Leadership at Apple and to provide report extracts to the CEO on the strengths and weaknesses of Apple’s Leadership using the techniques and concepts you have covered in the module. Your report extracts should cover the following:
Task 1 -Leadership and Management (18 marks; LO1, LO2)
o Critically evaluate the Leadership and Management style at Apple using relevant models.
o Provide an in-depth comparison of Apple’s Leadership Style with that of at least one of its competitors, highlighting the key challenges for the company’s future development.
o Critically evaluate how Apple’s ability to overcome these significant business challenges in the future
o You are required to support your arguments with academic literature and references to other similar real companies.
Task 2 – Leadership for Performance (18 marks; LO1, LO2, LO3)
o Create a Balanced Scorecard for Apple which includes a range of Strategic Objectives and Key Performance Indicators
o Explain how “Leadership for Performance” approaches can be applied to help Apple achieve the objectives identified above
o Critically evaluate key financial statements within recent 2023 quarterly results (quarter ended 1st July 2023) and evaluate performance based on data provided
o Support your arguments with academic literature and references to other similar real companies.
Task 3 – Ethical Leadership (16 marks; LO3, LO4)
o Identify and critically evaluate at least two of the most significant ethical issues that Apple now faces.
o Provide a few recommendations on how the ethical issues identified can be managed effectively.
o Support your arguments with academic literature and references to other similar real companies.
Presentation and Structure (8 Marks)
• Clear structure and layout
• Writing style: professional and concise
• Appropriate Harvard referencing: range and credibility of the sources use and correct application of Harvard referencing style throughout report and appendices. A full report is not required: do NOT include an executive summary, introduction or conclusion. Your report structure should include the following sections:
