Practicing Positive Guidance Assignment (This assignment is worth 30% of your final grade)
This assignment is based primarily on Chapter 10 of your textbook. Please read Chapter 10 carefully
before attempting this assignment. You will also find Chapter 7 useful.
Objective: To use the techniques of positive guidance to guide children toward age-appropriate
behavior.
This assignment will consist of three scenarios. Please respond to each of the three scenarios.
Scenario 1:
You teach in a preschool classroom. You have created a wonderful new centre meant to inspire
dramatic play with dress-up clothing and various toys that could be used in many imaginative ways.
Five minutes after you have introduced the center to the children, two children are using long, thin
dolls as swords with which to fight. Using the dolls as swords is certainly imaginative, but the rowdy,
unsafe behavior is not what you had hoped to happen.
Your Immediate
Response:
Record exactly what
you would say and do
to guide the children
into safer behaviour.
When possible, use
positive requests
rather than negative
commands
