An Ethnographic Study on the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Children, Families, and Teachers in the UAE

In this paper, I observe quarantined families and teachers’ narratives in the UAE amid the COVID-19 pandemic over a span of six weeks from late May 2020 to early July 2020. Through unstructured and semi-structured interviews via Zoom, participants shared their daily experience in lock down, focusing on the effect of school closures on their families and students. Evidence from my study brings forth the struggle parents and teachers endured to balance their home and work life, on account of the added responsibility of supervising and teaching their own children as well as their students while maintaining the home. A key theme that arose is resilience amidst the pandemic.
