Cultural Tourism and Heritage Management

Task:
World Heritage Sites are the common heritage of humanity. Protecting and preserving our cultural and natural heritage is a complex
management task. There are TWO parts to this assessment. You will need to get into groups before you begin this assessment. Your lecturer
will help the class to do this.

PART 1:
Create a short written case study (600 words) that critically discusses 2 social and/or ethical issues which need to be addressed when
managing your chosen world heritage site (WHS). The case study will be submitted in Week 10.
Guidance – Case study
• You should cover 2 social and/or ethical issues linked to your chosen WHS
• Discuss what challenges these issues present – please support this with literature, referencing appropriately
• Comment on why it is so difficult for the tourism industry to manage world heritage sites

Unit learning outcomes 1. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the interplay between cultural tourism and heritage
management, and how these concepts can complement and conflict with each other.
2. Articulate through written and presentation skills an analysis of current debates within cultural
tourism and heritage management.

PART 2:
You are required to deliver a 15-20 min group presentation (each individual 4-5 min) that analyses the management of a world heritage site
(using a case study of your choice).
Guidance – Presentation:
• Briefly introduce your chosen case study e.g.
where located? How many visitors does it receive? Are there any trends in supply and demand?
why classified as world heritage?
what type of world heritage?
• Show awareness of the complex tasks involved in managing world heritage sites successfully
• Undertake an analysis of how the world heritage site is managed (using an appropriate framework)
• Critically evaluate to what extent the site is managed successfully
• Provide recommendations on what can be improved in terms of the management of the site; when providing recommendations
make reference to successful examples
It is hoped that these presentations will be able to take place in class. However, the exact format of your presentation will be
communicated to you in advance of your submission and discussed in class and during your assessment week. No student will be
disadvantaged due to any adjustments which may need to be made.

What do I need to do to pass? (Threshold Expectations from UIF)
In order to pass assignment 2, you will need to:
• Identify some social and ethical issues that need to be addressed within the cultural tourism industry by heritage management.
• Demonstrate how both quantitative and qualitative data support your findings.
How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade?
In week 1, a general overview of the assignment and requirements will be given. This will be followed by a more detailed discussion on how
you can produce high quality work in this assignment (week 8). We will be filling this section in together in class. Make sure you have
downloaded/printed out the Assignment Brief and bring it to the session with you.

How does this assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?
Heritage management has become a significant component of the global tourism industry. Heritage Management has profound power and
influence upon the preservation, conservation, presentation and representation of culture and heritage within tourism, which are issues
addressed in scheduled sessions. This assignment allows you to explore some of the challenges of managing heritage sites in more depth.
